Messiah Scores Twice in Shutout at Dickinson
Carlisle, PA –Holly Burgard collected assists on each of the Falcons' goals on Tuesday, leading Messiah to a 2-0 shutout of Dickinson on the Red Devils' home field. Nikki Elsaesser scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year in the first-half while Erin Sollenberger netted her first career goal shortly after halftime.
Messiah came out from the start with aggressive play through the midfield, creating five shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Their precision passing put them up 1-0 in the 25th minute when Burgard crossed possession to the front of the goal from the right side. The ball went through the Red Devils' defense where Nikki Elsaesser ran onto a one-timer from inside the 18-yard line.
Moments later, Kyele Bridel came close to doubling the lead after crossing to the midfield from the left side for a shot from 23 yards out. Her shot was headed for the far side of the net before keeper Charlotte Armour made a diving save over her left shoulder.
Despite outshooting their hosts 11-0 in the first frame, Messiah settled for the 1-0 lead through the half. Messiah's second goal finally came in the 55th minute when Sollenberger tallied for the first time in her career. Like Elsaesser before her, she benefited from the feed of Burgard as Messiah's midfield and wingers kept the pressure on Dickinson's defenders.
The Falcons continued to dominate territory and possession until the end of the game and held Dickinson without a shot on the evening (23-0). Messiah also attempted all 12 of the game's corner kicks, with Armour picking up seven saves in goal.
The win marks the fourth-straight season the Falcons have defeated the Red Devils, with Messiah outscoring Dickinson 13-0 in those contests.
Dickinson falls to 4-5-2 with the loss while Messiah improves to 6-2-1.
The Falcons will next play on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Grove City College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
