Blugolds take it to Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior women's team

The Yellowjackets went to UW-Eau Claire hoping to get that coveted first WIAC win.  Those hopes will have to wait until Saturday afternoon as UW-Eau Claire ran away from the Yellowjackets 9-0.

The Blugolds came out firing on all cylinders 1:33 into the match when Kara Ryan fooled Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) in front of the net with a shot to give them a 1-0 lead.  The women in blue and gold didn't look back an inch from that point when Caroline Henderson added her sixth goal of the season at 6:51 to widen their lead to 2-0.

Work wasn't done yet for the half when Audra Zimmer dug the Yellowjacket wound deeper at 39:32 to make the score 3-0.  The Blugolds didn't allow a single Yellowjacket shot during the first half while they put up 20.

The Blugolds turned the jets on turbo speed for the second half, much due to Caroline Henderson's two goals at 47:18 and 48:27 to widen the Blugold lead to 5-0.  Mandy Smith added to the attack when she took control of the ball from Paige LeGate on the right side.  She took the ball to about ten yards from the net where she fired a shot that got the best of Hatlewick at 60:31 to make the score 6-1.

The 70th minute was like salt on a wound for the Yellowjackets as the Blugolds notched two goals within that time frame.  Tara Dennehy was first score at 70:17 to make the score 7-0, followed by an Emily Turi unassisted goal at 70:54 to make things 8-0.

Rachelle Belott put the icing on the cake with a goal go her own at 78:49 to give the Blugolds a 9-0 lead and eventual win.  The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets 37-2 for the contest.

Hatlewick made 15 saves for the Yellowjackets while Nina Behrenbrinker only needed to stop one shot for the Blugolds.

The Yellowjackets (3-14-1, 0-7 WIAC) will close out their WIAC schedule when UW-La Crosse pays a visit on Saturday, October 26.  Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
