Eagles blank Yellowjackets in WIAC finale
The Yellowjackets strolled onto the Superior High School north field on a chilly Saturday afternoon with a chance to win their first WIAC game. Things didn't go as planned as UW-La Crosse spoiled those dreams with a 3-0 victory.
Stellar defensive plays and a few big stops kept the Yellowjackets in the contest through out the majority of the contest. The Yellowjackets kept it within 1-0 going into halftime. That first goal came at 19:08 when Jamie Ochsenwald took control of the ball and took it up the field on the left side with plenty of wide open Eagles in sight. She passed the ball over Megan Gresi in front of the net, who took a shot that hit the left goal post and found it's way past the goal line to give UW-La Crosse the lead.
The Eagles came out flying in the second half and didn't look back with a couple of nice shots to get things rolling. Jamie Ochsenwald got the scoring groove going for the Eagles went she fired a cross pass on the right side of the field over to Laura Sauer. The ball went off Sauer's right foot and past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) to make the score 2-0 UW-La Crosse.
A couple of lucky bounces started to go the way of UW-La Crosse. One of the lucky Eagles to score was Kelly Denk, who fired a shot from deep in the middle of the field. The ball took a nasty bounce over Hatlewick's head and into the net to give UW-La Crosse a 3-0 lead.
Hatlewick registered 12 saves for the Yellowjackets while Ashley Tracy made one save for UW-La Crosse.
The Yellowjackets (3-15-1, 0-8 WIAC) will close out the 2013 season on Tuesday, October 29 when they travel to Martin Luther College. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.
