CCC Champs! Nor’easters capture first conference title since 2000
BIDDEFORD, Maine. – Avery Bond headed home a corner kick in the 44th minute of play to lift the third-seeded University of New England women's soccer team to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship with a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Western New England on Saturday at UNE Blue Storm Stadium.
Jessie Maywalt curled in a corner kick from the far end of the field to the top of the box to find Bond for the winning goal. The score was the first of the season for the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Nor'easter defense kept the Golden Bears off the board in the second half. Western New England nearly knotted the score in the 66th minute after Bee Murphy hit the crossbar off a free kick from just outside the box. Later a shot by Vanessa Chiarella nearly went in from close range, but Peyton Janelle stopped the threat with a save on the right post.
Both goalkeepers were stellar on the afternoon as Jenna Pannone made five saves for the Nor'easters and Alex Lemekha had seven stops for the Golden Bears. UNE did not allow a goal on its way to the championship.
The Nor'easters advance into the NCAA Division III Tournament beginning on Saturday, Nov. 10. It marks their first appearance since 2000. The 64-team field will be announced on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
