Reilly Sends No. 5 MIT Past JWU, 3-0, in NCAA Opener

The Lead: The No. 5 nationally-ranked MIT women's soccer team received two goals and an assist from senior Montana Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) as the Engineers blanked Johnson & Wales University, 3-0, in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

With the win, the Engineers advance to the second round of the tournament and will face No. 24 Williams College tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm with a berth to the Sweet 16 on the line. Earlier this season, MIT defeated Williams, 3-1, in Williamstown. 

SCORING SUMMARY:

- 48th minute (47:37): After a scoreless half, Reilly gave MIT a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Emily Berzolla (Riverside, Conn.)ripped a shot that was saved by Colleen Lynch and Reilly was there to put back the rebound for her ninth goal of the season.

- 85th minute (84:15): Reilly registered her second goal of the game with 5:45 to play in regulation as her initial shot was saved, but she was able to gather her own rebound to give MIT a 2-0 advantage.

- 87th minute (86:33): Just 2:18 later, Reilly crossed the ball to classmate Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who redirected the ball under the crossbar for her seventh goal of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT improved to 6-6-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have now won three straight first round matchups on the national stage. This was the first meeting between MIT and Johnson & Wales University.

- The victory for MIT tied the single season wins record as the Engineers recorded their 20th win of the year. MIT also extended its unbeaten streak at home to 49 straight matches, the eighth longest streak in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history.

- MIT pushed its winning streak to 14 and its unbeaten streak this season to 20. With three goals today, MIT also broke the single season program record for goals and now has 79 this season.

- Reilly's five point match (two goals and one assist) marked a new career-high for the senior, while Berzolla registered her 40th career assist today and is now two helpers away from tying the program record that was set back in 1994.

- MIT keeper Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) made three saves over the final 48:56 of the match to pick up her second win of the season (2-1-0), while Johnson & Wales keeper Colleen Lynch (15-3-0) made 12 saves over 90 minutes for the Wildcats.

- MIT outshot Johnson & Wales by a 24-5 margin and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
